Hairline Modification for Transgender Men

Transgender patients are no different than any other person seeking hair transplant surgery. The main issue faced by transsexual patients is the need to change a “masculine” hairline to a more “feminine” one. This issue applies to transgender patients who suffer from male patterned baldness. There are generally two issues: the recession of the frontal corners, which makes the frame of the face more masculine, and additional miniaturization or balding of the rest of the hair caused by male patterned baldness which may require further hair restoration.

Follicular unit hair transplant surgery is currently the best option to modify the hairline.  Modification includes refilling the receded frontal corners and correcting the hairline to a more natural and feminine looking one.  The second issue is male patterned baldness which is generally caused by testosterone.  Anti-testosterone medication like Spironolactone can help slow down additional hair loss but it does not stop the balding process.  Transgender male patients whom have had their testicles removed surgically will not experience the same condition since they have eliminated testosterone.  Propecia is also a medical treatment used to control hair loss.  Patients who are genetically susceptible to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) would have to be most concerned about medication options like Propecia.

For patients seeking to modify or restore their hairline from a masculine hairline to a more feminine hairline should consider a hair transplant procedure.  This may also apply if the patient also suffers from male patterned baldness.  We also recommend continuing all regular medical treatments of anti-testosterone medication.  The ideal final result may take more than one session to accomplish.

Women hairline differentiates from a male hairline in many aspects such as the location of the hairline from eyebrow level at mid frontal and laterals, direction and orientation of hair shafts between men and women, and the final result of the temples.  Transgender hair restoration procedures must always be treated meticulously and professionally as to achieve the desired result.  A good hair transplant surgeon should always have a good understanding in the differentiating facial features and proportions between a male and female hairline.  Our hair transplant clinic of Orange County, CA specializes in these procedures and other services.

I take scientific findings from medical experts and put them down in writing for the general public. My writings are meant for educational purposes and for review by medical professionals but also meant to be read by the world.

As a note, you are referring to transgender women, not transgender men. Trans-women are Male-To-Female (hence being called women), whereas trans-men are Female-To-Male (hence being called men).
